Brazilian thought is one of the richest examples of afro-diasporic thought in the Americas, and yet we don't know its fundamental essays! The language barrier and the absence of translations has meant that Afro-Brazilian essays have not been studied by everyday people living in North America, Europe, or other countries in Latin America. In this introductory course, we will turn that around, by taking a close look at theories that expand conceptions of the Black experience in the Americas, from Gonzales’ “Amefricanidade” to Nascimento’s “Quilombismo”. From essays on maroonage-quilombismo-to the works of Lélia Gonzales, Abdias and Beatriz Nascimento, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Sueili Carneiro, and much more!
